Stations of the Cross

Added to the Seeking God Site during Lent 2010

Details of the author and artist are on the next page.  I have acted only as Designer and Editor and as usual insisted that Divine pronouns are given a capital letter.

Some of the references in Sue's words may be unfamiliar. For example Oil of Chrism is used in some Churches for annointing especially at Baptism. Also an  Aumbry is a small cupboard or Niche where such oils are kept and often also contain what is known as The Reserved Sacrament. This is consecrated bread and wine (from the Communion Service) which could, for example, be used to take to the sick. If you visit a church which does this, there will be a light or candle nearby signifying the Presence of Christ. It is also fair to say  that in many churches, and especially the Free ones, such ideas are frowned upon to say the least. None of this, dear reader, should be allowed to detract from your use of the Stations as an aid to meditation and prayer. God Bless you as you do so.

Traditionally there are Fourteen Stations taking the pilgrim up to the point where Jesus is laid in the tomb.  During Lent and especially Holy Week it will be appropriate to Stop there. Some churches have a Fifteenth Station celebrating Christ's Ressurection and it is hoped to provide one by Easter Sunday.

Finally: Sue often mentions The Cross in my Pocket and, if you are not familiar with it, it is exactly that and available in most Cathedral Bookshops

The words are these:

I carry a Cross in my pocket
A simple reminder to me
Of the fact that I am a Christian
No matter where I may be.

This little Cross is not magic,
Nor is it a good luck charm
It isn't meant to protect me
From every physical harm.

It's not for identification
For all the world to see
It's simply an understanding
Between my Saviour and me.

When I put my hand in my pocket
To bring out a coin or a key
The Cross is there to remind me
Of the price He paid for me.
It reminds me, too, to be thankful
For my blessings day by day
And to strive to serve Him better
In all that I do and say.

It's also a daily reminder
Of the peace and comfort I share
With all who know my Master
And give themselves to His care.

So, I carry a Cross in my pocket
Reminding no one but me
That Jesus Christ is the Lord of my life
If only I'll let Him be
