Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross

We adore You O Christ and we bless You, Because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

It was the Day of Preparation, Passover Eve, so an urgency grew to remove the embarrassing bodies from view to prevent contamination of the Sabbath.

The screams and groans of the dying men had stopped, leaving a morbid silence over Calvary. It was broken only by the sound of the weeping mourners.

Among them was Mary ever faithful to God, ever loyal to her Son

Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the Council and secret follower of Jesus had been to Pilate and claimed Jesus' body and, after gently removing Him from the Cross, laid Him in His weeping mother’s arms.

The prophecy of Simeon was fulfilled




Oh Mary, recall the solemn moment when Jesus your Divine Son, dying on the Cross confided us to your maternal care.

When our own lives are heavy with sadness; Through the partings, which must come our way
Our children-leaving home;  Friends moving away
                                                                         and, most of all, when we grieve our loved ones:

Make yourself known to us and let us feel the effects of your powerful intercession with your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ
